Welcome to August on the Hudson Beach FL coast. The Fourth of July celebrations are behind us, the Scallop & Music Fest has come and gone, and the summer crowds have started to thin. But if you think the fun is winding down, think again. August on the Pasco County Gulf coast is one of the most peaceful, rewarding stretches of the entire year, and there is plenty happening between now and Labor Day. Here is your early August community update from your local guide, Kathleen Paglaiccetti.

Scallop Season: Two Weeks Left

The most important date on the calendar right now: recreational bay scallop season in the Pasco County zone closes on August 18. That means you have just over two weeks left to wade into the seagrass beds off Hudson Beach FL for one of the Gulf coast's most beloved summer traditions.

The good news is that the post-festival weeks are often the best time to go. The crowds have cleared, the water clarity has improved as sediment from boat traffic has settled, and the scallops are still abundant in the shallow grass meadows. Head out on a weekday morning during an outgoing tide for the best conditions. Wading from Strickland Memorial Park in two to three feet of water is the most accessible option for families. If you have a boat, the grass flats near Anclote Key offer even clearer water and larger scallop concentrations.

Do not forget your mesh bag, dive flag, and Florida saltwater fishing license. The bag limit is 2 gallons of whole scallops or 1 pint of shucked meat per person per day. Several charter services from Hudson Marina still have openings and offer guided scalloping trips that include all the gear you need. Check with Nature Coast Inshore Charters or American Fishing Outfitters for availability.

Update: Hudson Beach Crab House Has Closed

When I wrote the earlier version of this update, I was excited to welcome the Hudson Beach Crab House at 6928 Clark Street as a new addition to the Hudson Beach FL dining scene. Unfortunately, I have since learned that the restaurant has closed. The fresh seafood and waterfront views we were all looking forward to are no longer available at this location.

For stone crab claws, peel-and-eat shrimp, and grilled fish plates with a view, the long-standing Clark Street favorites remain the best bet. Sam's Beach Bar at 6325 Clark Street and Inn on the Gulf at 6330 Clark Street both continue to serve excellent Gulf catches in beautiful waterfront settings. I have updated our dining guide to reflect this change.

Back to School: Pasco County Starts August 13

Pasco County schools begin the 2026-2027 academic year on Thursday, August 13. If you have school-aged children, that gives you just over a week of summer freedom left. Make the most of it with a scalloping trip, a family day at SunWest Park, or an evening dinner at Inn on the Gulf or Sam's Beach Bar while the sunset still lingers past 8 PM.

For families new to the area, Pasco County public schools serve the Hudson, Florida area through several elementary, middle, and high schools, including Hudson Elementary, Hudson Middle, and Hudson High School. The district also offers magnet programs, career academies, and virtual school options. The last day of the 2026-2027 school year is May 28, 2027, with holidays and breaks built in throughout the year.

Upcoming Events in Pasco County

Even as summer winds down, the events calendar stays active. Here are a few happenings worth noting:

• La Noche Grande (Latin Night)

  Saturday, August 8 in New Port Richey. Live Latin music, dancing, and food vendors. A vibrant community celebration just a short drive south from Hudson Beach FL. Check Eventbrite for details and tickets.

• Palm Care Workshop at Canterbury Farms

  Saturday, August 15 at 10:00 AM. A free workshop on palm varieties, care, and common problems at Canterbury Farms Nursery & Garden Center in Hudson, Florida. Perfect for homeowners looking to keep their Gulf coast landscaping thriving through the summer heat.

• SunWest Park Summer Series

  Continuing through August. Live music, food trucks, aqua park, and paddleboard rentals at 17362 Old Dixie Highway in Hudson, Florida. Open daily 7 AM to 7 PM. The $5 parking fee gets you in.

Fishing Update: August Bite

The fishing action heats up in August in its own way. Snook remain catch-and-release only and are holding near the beaches and mangrove shorelines. Redfish are active on the sand bars near the Anclote River, and the spotted seatrout bite starts to pick up as water temperatures moderate. For offshore anglers, grouper and kingfish remain strong targets on the artificial reef system off the Pasco County coast.

Peak Hurricane Season: A Quick Reminder

August marks the start of the peak months of Atlantic hurricane season, and while NOAA's 2026 outlook calls for a below-normal season due to strengthening El Nino conditions, it is always wise to stay prepared. The Gulf of Mexico waters off the Hudson Beach FL coast remain warm enough to support rapid storm development, and the Gulf coast from Tampa north through the Nature Coast is an area forecasters watch closely.

Here is a quick checklist for Pasco County residents:

• Check your emergency kit: water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio.
• Know your evacuation zone. Pasco County emergency management provides zone maps online.
• Review your insurance coverage, including flood insurance (standard policies do not cover flood damage).
• Sign up for Pasco County emergency alerts at pascocountyfl.net.

As of August 1, the National Hurricane Center reports no active systems in the Atlantic, Caribbean, or Gulf, and major forecast models indicate quiet conditions through at least mid-August. But the Nature Coast has learned to respect hurricane season, and a little preparation goes a long way.

Looking Ahead: Fall on the Nature Coast

While summer is not over yet, it is worth noting what is coming. September brings quieter beaches as families settle into the school routine, and the start of prime inshore fishing season as water temperatures begin to cool from their August peak. The Friday Night Farmers Markets continue through the fall in downtown Hudson and New Port Richey, with fresh produce, local artisans, and food trucks.

October and November are festival season on the Gulf coast. The Sponge Docks Seafood Festival in Tarpon Springs, the Florida Senior Games across multiple venues, and the Pasco County Fair in Dade City are all on the calendar.
