Today Is Your Last Day for Scallops

I have been writing about scallop season all summer long, and I am not going to let it slip away without one more reminder. The recreational bay scallop season in Pasco County closes at the end of the day on August 18. That means Monday, August 17, is your last full day to get out on the grass flats off Hudson Beach FL.

The conditions this week are ideal. The post-festival calm has settled over the water, boat traffic is minimal, and the water clarity this late in the season is often the best we see all year. Wade out from Robert J. Strickland Memorial Park on Clark Street during an outgoing tide, and you can find scallops in just two to three feet of water. The seagrass beds hold scallops in the shallows, and the morning light makes them easy to spot.

What's Happening the Rest of August

Scallop season closing does not mean the fun stops. Here is what I have on my calendar for the rest of August along the Hudson Beach FL and Pasco County coast.

New Spots to Check Out in Pasco County

The dining scene keeps growing along the coast. Here are some new places I have been hearing about from locals that are worth a visit:

• Rye Street Deli & Dogs

  A new deli and hot dog spot in New Port Richey that has been drawing rave reviews. From classic pastrami sandwiches to creative hot dog combinations, this is the kind of unpretentious neighborhood spot that fills a real need. A quick drive south from Hudson Beach FL.

• Muckeye's Pizzeria & Guitar Bar

  At 5308 Lemon Street in New Port Richey. Wood-fired pizzas and live acoustic music in a warm, intimate setting. The pizza is excellent and the atmosphere is pure Florida casual. A welcome addition to the downtown NPR scene.

• Vino and Vibes

  A new wine bar in New Port Richey featuring live jazz, piano, and blues. A sophisticated addition to the Pasco County nightlife scene, just a short drive from Hudson, Florida.

• Pint and Barrel Saloon and Eating House

  Opening in a historic downtown New Port Richey building at 6236 Grand Boulevard. A saloon-style restaurant that blends Gulf coast flavors with craft cocktails in a beautifully restored space. Worth keeping an eye on for a fall visit.

Labor Day Weekend: Your Preview

Labor Day weekend falls on September 5-7, 2026, and it is the traditional end-of-summer bookend on the Gulf coast. Here is what to expect:

• SunWest Park Summer Series Finale. The summer events at SunWest Park wrap up over Labor Day weekend. The aqua park, paddleboard rentals, and beach will be open through the holiday with special programming.

Fishing Report: Late August

The fishing on the Pasco County coast remains excellent as we move through late August. Here is what is biting:

• Mangrove snapper

  Still the featured species for August. They are holding around the artificial reef system and inshore structure off Hudson Beach FL. Free-lined pilchards or small shrimp work best.

• Redfish

  Active on sand bars near the Anclote River and mangrove shorelines. Best targeted in the early morning before the heat sets in.

• Spotted seatrout

  Holding over grass flats and along sandy bottoms. Look for them in three to five feet of water on an incoming tide.

Atlantic Hurricane Outlook: Quiet for Now

Good news on the weather front. NOAA issued an updated seasonal forecast on August 6 calling for a 75% chance of a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season. Strong El Nino conditions are suppressing tropical development through wind shear and dry air. As of mid-August, only three named storms have formed (Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal), none of which reached hurricane strength.

That said, August through October is still peak hurricane season, and Gulf conditions can change quickly. Now is a good time to review your Pasco County emergency plan, restock your hurricane kit, and sign up for county alerts at pascocountyfl.net.

Community Development: New Manufacturing Facility in Zephyrhills

In economic development news, Bauducco Foods, the Brazil-based wafer producer, officially opened its largest U.S. manufacturing facility in Zephyrhills, Pasco County this year. The 160,000-square-foot plant represents a significant investment in our county's industrial base and brings new jobs to the region. It is one of several signs that Pasco County continues to grow as a destination for both business and quality of life.

What the Quiet Season Looks Like

With scallop season closing tomorrow and the schools in full swing, the Hudson Beach FL coast begins its transition into the quiet season. If you have never experienced late August on the Gulf coast, here is what it feels like:

• Empty beaches. The stretch of sand from Strickland Park south along the coast is nearly deserted on weekday mornings. Bring a chair and a book. You might share the view with a few pelicans and nothing else.
• Prime paddleboarding. The early morning glass-off on the Gulf is at its best. Launch from Strickland Park or SunWest Park between 7 and 8 AM for flat, calm water and consistent dolphin encounters.
• Afternoon thunderstorms. Still a daily occurrence through August. Plan outdoor activities for the morning and save indoor plans for after 2 PM. The storms roll in between 2 and 4 PM, clear quickly, and leave behind spectacular evening light.
• Sunset shifting earlier. Through mid-August, the sun sets around 8:12 PM. By the end of August, it is closer to 7:55 PM. Still plenty of time for a beachfront dinner at Inn on the Gulf or Sam's Beach Bar.

A Look Ahead: Fall on the Nature Coast

After Labor Day, the rhythm of Pasco County life shifts unmistakably toward fall. The Friday Night Farmers Markets continue weekly. The Tarpon Springs Seafood Festival at the Sponge Docks (November 7-8, 2026) will bring Greek culture and Gulf seafood to the waterfront, just 20 minutes south of Hudson Beach FL. And the Florida Senior Games will bring athletes from across the state to venues across Hudson, Florida, New Port Richey, and Spring Hill.
