Mid-summer on the Gulf coast is paddleboarding season. By mid-June, the water around Hudson Beach, Florida settles into its warmest, calmest stretch of the year — surface temperatures in the mid-80s, glassy conditions before sunrise, and a window of about three hours each morning where the Gulf feels like a private pool. If you have been waiting for the right moment to get on the water in Hudson, Florida, this is it.

Why June Is the Best Month to Paddle

June hits a sweet spot on the Pasco County coast. The afternoon thunderstorm pattern has not fully ramped up yet — you get more clear mornings than you will in July or August. The Gulf water is warm enough to fall in comfortably. Boat traffic is still moderate compared to the peak Fourth of July week. And the sunrise, which breaks around 6:25 AM, paints the water in soft gold and peach tones that make every paddle feel like a photo shoot.

By July, the daily thunderstorm cycle is in full force, and you need to be off the water by noon at the latest. In June, you often have until 10 or 11 AM before clouds start building. That extra hour makes a difference if you want to explore a longer route or spend time watching dolphins.

The Dawn Paddle: A Local Ritual

If there is one thing every Hudson Beach local knows, it is this: the best time to paddleboard is between first light and 8 AM. The water is glassy. The wind is negligible. The air is warm but not yet hot. And the wildlife is active.

I start most summer mornings at Robert J. Strickland Memorial Park on Clark Street in Hudson Beach. By 6:30 AM, I am on the water. The Gulf stretches out flat in every direction, and on a calm morning, you can see for miles. The fishing boats have not left the marina yet. It is just you, the water, and whatever shows up.

Most mornings, what shows up is dolphins. Hudson Beach sits on one of the most dolphin-dense stretches of the Florida Gulf coast. Pods of bottlenose dolphins feed in the shallow flats just offshore, and on a paddleboard, you are at their level. You will hear them before you see them — the sound of a dolphin surfacing to breathe is distinctive once you know it. Keep your distance (federal guidelines recommend at least 50 yards), stay quiet, and let them come to you.

Insider Tip: Bring a waterproof phone pouch. The best dolphin encounters happen when you least expect them, and you will want to capture the moment. Polarized sunglasses also help — they cut the glare on the water and let you see fish, rays, and dolphins below the surface.

Best Launch Points for Summer Paddleboarding

Hudson Beach and the surrounding Pasco County coast offer several excellent launch points for summer paddleboarding. Each one has a different character.

  • Robert J. Strickland Memorial Park (Hudson Beach)

The go-to launch point for Gulf paddleboarding in Hudson, Florida. Free parking, direct water access, and fishing facilities. Walk your board down to the seawall and launch. Head south along the coast for open-water paddling or north toward the mangrove shorelines. Arrive by 7 AM on weekends.

  • SunWest Park

Hudson's 70-acre spring-fed lake is the safest place to learn paddleboarding in Pasco County. The water is calm, shallow, and slightly cooler than the Gulf. Board rentals are available on-site. The park also has an aqua park, beach volleyball, and picnic areas — great for families. Visit site

  • Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park

The premier kayak and paddleboard destination on the Hudson Beach coast. Put in at the Salt Springs Run and paddle through mangrove tunnels, salt marshes, and calm tidal creeks. The park protects over 4,000 acres of coastal wilderness. You will likely see dolphins, osprey, roseate spoonbills, and possibly manatees. Guided eco-tours are available, or launch your own board for a self-guided adventure.

  • Hudson Marina

For experienced paddlers who want open-water Gulf access with a bit more distance. Launch from the marina and paddle west toward the Gulf. The water is deeper here, and the views are expansive. Watch for boat traffic, especially on weekends.

A Perfect Mid-Summer Paddle Route

Here is my favorite summer morning paddle, and one I recommend to anyone visiting Hudson Beach, Florida for the first time:

Launch from Strickland Park at 6:30 AM. Paddle south along the mangrove shoreline. The water is shallow — often two to three feet — and crystal clear on calm mornings. After about 15 minutes, you will reach a stretch where the mangroves arch over the water, creating natural tunnels. Paddle through them slowly. The fish are everywhere — small mullet jumping, needlefish threading through the roots, and the occasional manatee resting in the warm shallows.

Continue south toward the open flats. This is where the dolphins feed. On a good morning, you will see three or four pods working the shallows, pushing baitfish into tight schools. Stay perpendicular to their path and let them pass. If you are patient and quiet, they will sometimes circle back and investigate your board. It is one of those experiences that reminds you why you live here.

Paddle back by 8 AM, grab a coffee, and head to the beach for a swim. The rest of the day is yours.

Safety Tips for Summer Paddleboarding in Hudson Beach FL

  • Start early, finish early. Be off the water by 10 AM in June, earlier in July and August. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast and can produce dangerous lightning over open water.
  • Check the wind forecast. Anything above 10 mph makes paddleboarding significantly harder. The best conditions are calm mornings with winds under 5 mph. Check apps like Windy or NOAA before you launch.
  • Watch for boat traffic. Stay close to shore and make yourself visible. Bright-colored boards and PFDs help. Avoid paddling near channel markers or marina exits.
  • Heat is real. Even at 7 AM, the Florida sun is strong in June. Hydrate before you paddle, and bring water on the board. Heat exhaustion sneaks up on you.
  • Respect the wildlife. Federal law requires at least 50 yards of distance from dolphins. Do not chase them. Do not feed them. Let them go about their business while you enjoy the view.

Dolphin Watching Beyond the Board

You do not need a paddleboard to see dolphins in Hudson Beach. Strickland Memorial Park is one of the best shore-based dolphin watching spots in Pasco County. On any given summer morning, stand at the seawall between 6 and 8 AM and you will likely see fins breaking the surface within a few hundred yards of shore. Bring binoculars for a closer look.

Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park is another reliable spot. The kayak trail through the salt marsh brings you within close range of dolphins that feed in the tidal creeks. The park rangers can point you toward the best areas for the time of year.

For a different perspective, several fishing charter companies in Hudson offer sunset cruises that pass through dolphin feeding grounds. It is a great option for families or anyone who prefers to stay on a boat.

After Your Paddle: What to Do Nearby

  • Grab breakfast at Inn of the Gulf on Clark Street. Fresh seafood and waterfront views. Dining guide.
  • Cast a line from Strickland Park. Sheepshead and mackerel are common summer catches right from the shore. Bring live shrimp.
  • Bird-watch at Werner-Boyce. The morning hours are best for spotting roseate spoonbills, osprey, and white pelicans along the trails.
  • Swim at Hudson Beach. The warm Gulf water is perfect for cooling off after a paddle. Shallow and calm in the morning.

The Bottom Line: Mid-summer paddleboarding in Hudson Beach, Florida is one of the best-kept secrets on the Gulf coast. Early mornings bring glassy water, dolphin encounters, and the kind of coastal beauty that reminds you why this part of Pasco County is special. Get out early, stay hydrated, and let the water do the rest.

Whether you are a seasoned paddler or just getting started, the waters around Hudson Beach offer something for everyone. The Gulf is warm, the wildlife is abundant, and the sunrises are worth every early alarm. Come see it for yourself.
