Your Summer Guide
to Hudson Beach
Summer on the Gulf coast is not like summer anywhere else. The water temperature climbs into the mid-80s by late June, the sun rises before 6:30, and the pace of life slows to match the rhythm of the tides. If you are visiting Hudson Beach for the first time or just getting to know the area, here is everything you need to make the most of the warm months.
Water Temperature & Conditions
Gulf water temperatures around Hudson Beach typically reach 82-86 degrees Fahrenheit from June through September. That is warm enough to swim without a wetsuit, paddleboard in board shorts, and spend hours in the water without getting cold. Visibility varies, but calm mornings usually offer the clearest water.
Peak Activities
Summer is when Hudson Beach, Florida comes alive. Here is what to prioritize:
- Paddleboarding at dawn. The water is glassy before 8 AM, and you have a good chance of spotting dolphins feeding along the shoreline. Check our paddleboarding guide for launch points.
- Evening fishing charters. The summer sunset trips are popular for a reason. The light is golden, the fish are active, and the afternoon storms have usually passed. See our fishing spots guide for details.
- SunWest Park. The 70-acre spring-fed lake is slightly cooler than the gulf, which makes it perfect for families with kids who want to swim, paddle, or use the aqua park.
- Wildlife viewing at Werner-Boyce. Early morning is best. Look for roseate spoonbills, osprey, and dolphins in the salt marsh. Read more in our wildlife viewing guide.
The Afternoon Thunderstorm Rule
This is the one thing every Hudson Beach local knows: plan your outdoor activities for the morning. Between late June and early September, afternoon thunderstorms roll in almost every day, usually between 2 and 4 PM. They are typically brief, intense, and followed by clear skies. By 5 PM, the sun is often back out and the air feels fresh.
The practical upshot: do your paddleboarding, fishing, or beach time before noon. Use the afternoon for lunch, a nap, or exploring shops along US-19. Then head back out for sunset.
Insider Tips
- Park at Hudson Beach by 7 AM on weekends to get a spot near the water. It fills up by 9.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen. The Gulf water is warm enough that you will be in it longer than you think.
- The best sunset photos come from the waterfront at Strickland Park, facing southwest. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset.
- Sam's Beach Bar does a fish taco special on Wednesdays that locals swear by.
- If you are new to paddleboarding, SunWest Park is the safest place to start. The lake is calm, shallow, and there are rental boards on site.
Summer on the Gulf coast rewards the early risers and the patient observers. If you get up early, stay flexible, and let the rhythm of the water guide your day, you will understand why so many people come to Hudson Beach for a visit and never quite leave.
