Early October on the Hudson Beach FL Coast

· Community Update

October is officially here on the Hudson Beach FL coast, and it is one of the best months of the year in Pasco County. Florida stone crab season opens October 15, Funville Farm's fall festival runs every weekend through November 2, the mullet run is building toward its peak, and the Gulf water is still warm and clean. Here is your early October community update from Kathleen Paglaiccetti.

October Arrives: The Coast's Best Month

Locals will tell you the same thing every year: October is when the Hudson Beach FL coast hits its stride. The Gulf water is holding in the low 80s, warm enough to wade, swim, and paddle comfortably, while the mornings finally carry a crisp edge and the afternoon thunderstorms that ruled the summer have mostly faded. The sunsets arrive a little earlier each evening, the launches quiet down as the seasonal visitors head home, and the mullet run keeps building right along the shoreline, with snook, redfish, tarpon, and jack crevalle stacked behind the bait across Pasco County.

It is the same glassy-water stretch we wrote about in the early October fishing report, and it only gets better as the month moves along. Whether you fish, paddle, or just like a long sunset walk on the sand, this is the week to get out there.

Stone Crab Season Opens October 15: Mark the Calendar

Mark it now: Florida stone crab season opens Thursday, October 15 and runs through May 1, which means the Gulf coast's favorite sweet claw meat starts showing up fresh at markets and on menus from Hudson Beach FL to the Pasco County coast and beyond. The season window is the same every year, and the recreational rules come straight from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: only claws may be harvested, claws must be at least 2-7/8 inches measured from the elbow to the tip of the lower immovable finger, and claws may not be taken from egg-bearing crabs. The daily bag limit is 1 gallon of claws per person or 2 gallons per vessel, whichever is less, and recreational harvesters may use up to five traps.

If you would rather buy than dive, the good news is that Hudson, Florida has real, dependable seafood markets a short drive from the beach, and they all start taking stone crab orders as opening day approaches. When the first claws of the year land, they go fast, so locals call ahead.

Local Business Spotlight: Hudson's Seafood Markets

This month's spotlight is on the people who make the Gulf coast seafood calendar real: the markets that bring the catch from the water to your table. Three standouts serve the Hudson Beach FL area, and all three are worth knowing before stone crab season opens:

Seafood Connection FL Stone Crab

13833 Old Dixie Hwy, Hudson (727) 857-6045

A seafood market on Old Dixie Highway in Hudson known for its jumbo stone crab claws when the season opens. If you want the biggest claws of the year, this is where locals look first. Visit site.

Whitney & Son Seafoods

13326 US-19 N, Hudson (727) 868-4044

A long-time Hudson seafood market on US-19 with fresh Gulf shrimp, fish, and seasonal stone crab claws. The kind of place where the staff knows the boats and tells you what came in that morning. Visit site.

Aripeka Stone Crab Company

3080 Sunset Vista Dr, Spring Hill

A long-time favorite on the coast to the north of Hudson Beach FL, Aripeka Stone Crab Company has been a go-to for fresh claws in season for generations of Nature Coast families. A short drive up US-19 makes it an easy stop on a coastal day trip.

One more market worth knowing: Whitney's Fresh Market at 13314 US-19 in Hudson rounds out the local seafood shopping scene with fresh product and market staples. Between these spots, Pasco County residents have everything they need to eat well all season.

Fall Festival Weekends: Funville Farm & the October Calendar

The anchor of the fall calendar for Hudson Beach FL families is running every weekend right now. Funville Farm's 2026 Fall Festival at 13725 Hudson Ave in Hudson opens its pumpkin patch, hayrides, petting zoo, gem mining, jumping pillow, and mountain slides every Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM through November 2, all included with the $12 admission (ages 2 and under free). October is prime time for it, and their site posts the weekly details.

Beyond the farm, the Pasco County calendar fills in nicely this month. The Scarecrow Festival at the Pioneer Florida Museum in Dade City lands Saturday, October 10, about a 45-minute drive from the coast, and New Port Richey's free Concert in the Park series continues at Sims Park on the Cotee River, with the next show Saturday, October 17. Both are on our events page, along with the full month ahead.

Beach & Paddling Conditions: October's Glassy Mornings

On the water, October is the paddler's sweet spot on the Hudson Beach FL coast. The launches at SunWest Park and Hudson Beach are quiet on weekdays, the water is glassy in the early hours, and the afternoon storms that kept paddlers off the water in July are mostly gone. It is the same calm-water magic described in the mid-summer paddleboarding guide, only better as the air cools.

Wildlife watchers get a bonus this month. Dolphin activity stays strong along the shoreline, and manatee sightings start to increase in the rivers, creeks, and canals of Pasco County as the water cools. Give them space and enjoy the show. At Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park, fall migration brings songbirds, wading birds, and raptors through the salt marsh, making it one of the best birding stretches of the year in Hudson, Florida.

October Community Notes

Farmers markets keep their rhythms. The Friday night markets in downtown Hudson and New Port Richey continue through the fall, the Spring Hill Farmers Market runs Saturdays year-round, and the Fresh Market at Wiregrass returns the first and third Saturdays of each month. Cooler evenings make these the best sunset strolls on the Pasco County coast.

Order stone crab ahead. The markets above start taking orders as opening day approaches, and the jumbo claws go first. If you want claws on the table for the weekend after October 15, call your market this week.

One note on the dining strip: the waterfront bar Ollie's on the Beach on Clark Street has closed, so the dependable open-air choice with your feet near the sand remains Sam's Beach Bar at 6325 Clark Street, an easy walk from the beach and a reliable stop after a paddle. Our dining guide is kept current with the open spots and the closures.

The Bottom Line: October is the month the Hudson Beach FL coast shifts into its best season. Stone crab season opens October 15 across Pasco County, Funville Farm's fall festival runs weekends through November 2, the mullet run is peaking with the fish right behind the bait, and the markets in Hudson, Florida are ready to fill your table. Get out there, say hello to a neighbor, and enjoy the slow, warm fall on the Gulf coast.

See you at the pier,

Kathleen
