It is Thursday, October 15 on the Hudson Beach FL coast, and it is the day locals have had circled since spring: Florida stone crab season opens today across Pasco County. The first claws hit the markets this morning, Halloween week is coming up fast, the Tarpon Springs Seafood Festival is on the horizon, and the fall fishing has never been better in Hudson, Florida. Here is your late October community update from Kathleen Paglaiccetti.
Stone Crab Season Is Officially Open
The waiting is over. Florida stone crab season opened Thursday, October 15 and runs through May 1, which means the Gulf coast's favorite sweet claw meat is now fresh at markets and on menus from Hudson Beach FL to the rest of the Pasco County coast. The rules come straight from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: only claws may be harvested, each claw must measure at least 2-7/8 inches from the elbow to the tip of the lower immovable finger, and claws may not be taken from egg-bearing crabs. The daily bag limit is 1 gallon of claws per person or 2 gallons per vessel, whichever is less.
If you want claws on the table this weekend, call ahead now. The local markets in Hudson, Florida, including Seafood Connection FL and Whitney & Son, are filling orders as fast as the boats bring the catch in, and the jumbo claws go first every year. For anyone who dropped traps before opening day, the first pull is allowed today, so keep an eye on your buoy lines and mind the legal sizes when you sort your catch.
Halloween Week Across Pasco County
The second half of October on the Hudson Beach FL coast is Halloween season, and Pasco County leans into it in a big way. It starts this Saturday, October 17, with New Port Richey's free Concert in the Park at Sims Park from 7 to 9 PM, a high-energy show right on the Cotee River. Bring a blanket and a lawn chair, grab something from the food trucks, and settle in for a free riverside evening a short drive from Hudson Beach FL.
The week after brings the family favorites. The Fourth Friday Block Party fills downtown New Port Richey on Friday, October 23 with an evening outdoor market, local vendors, and live music. On Saturday, October 24, the Little Spookies Glow Trail & Patch lights up the grounds at A.F.I.R.E. on Ridge Road in Port Richey with a family-friendly Halloween glow trail and pumpkin patch. Downtown New Port Richey follows with Fall Sip or Treat on Thursday, October 29, an early Halloween evening along the riverfront, and the Boo Bash Halloween Sk8 Party at the Port Richey skating rink on Saturday, October 31 keeps the holiday going for all ages. Funville Farm's 2026 Fall Festival at 13725 Hudson Ave in Hudson rounds out the season with its pumpkin patch, hayrides, petting zoo, and jumping pillow every Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM through November 2, all included with the $12 admission. The events page has the full rundown as the calendar updates.
The Tarpon Springs Seafood Festival Is Almost Here
If there is one date to circle for the rest of the fall, it is the Tarpon Springs Seafood Festival at the famous Sponge Docks on Saturday and Sunday, November 7-8. The 38th annual festival celebrates the Gulf coast's seafood heritage with fresh catch, Greek culture, live music, and waterfront fun, and admission is free. The docks fill with boats, the grills fire up, and the whole waterfront turns into one long seafood feast just 20 minutes south of Hudson, Florida. It is the flagship food festival of the season on this stretch of coast, and the event details are up now.
Plan ahead if you go. Parking around the Sponge Docks fills early on festival weekends, so arrive before mid-morning, bring cash for the vendor booths, and go hungry. It is an easy day trip from Hudson Beach FL and pairs perfectly with a stop at a nearby Gulf beach on the way home.
Late October Fishing: Mackerel on the Rocks & Snook in the Creeks
On the water, late October is when the fall run really shows off along the Hudson Beach FL coast. The latest Pasco & North Pinellas fishing report has Spanish mackerel showing up in schools along the coast and nearshore over rock in about 30 to 35 feet of water, which is some of the most exciting light-tackle action of the year. Toss a silver spoon or a jig where the bait is pushed up and hold on, the mackerel hit fast and hard.
Inshore, the pattern is shifting in the best way. Snook and redfish are packing up into the creeks and backwaters along the coast, the same creeks the summer beach pattern leaves quiet, and the fishing has been as good as locals can remember on the hard-bottom points and bars. Mangrove snapper and speckled trout are on the bite too. One season note: the flounder harvest window closed October 15, so release any flounder you catch until the next opening. For launch points, shore spots, and the full species rundown, our complete fishing spots guide is the place to start.
Fall Markets & the First Cooler Mornings
Off the water, the fall rhythm of Hudson, Florida and Pasco County is in full swing. Cole's Farm Market on US-19 and Produce Patch on State Road 52 are filling their bins with pumpkins, squash, and mums, the Spring Hill Farmers Market runs every Saturday, and the Friday night markets in downtown Hudson and New Port Richey continue through the fall. Cooler evenings make these the best sunset strolls of the year, and the lineup from our fall farm stands guide is all still going strong.
Wildlife watchers get a treat as the water cools. Manatee sightings start to increase in the rivers, creeks, and canals of Pasco County, and at Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park the fall migration keeps bringing songbirds, wading birds, and raptors through the salt marsh. Give the manatees plenty of space, watch from a respectful distance, and enjoy the show. It is one of the best stretches of the year to be outside on the Hudson Beach FL coast.
Late October Community Notes
Order stone crab ahead. The markets in Hudson, Florida fill their jumbo claw orders fast in the first week of the season. If you want claws for a Halloween party or a weekend dinner, call your market now and reserve ahead.
Check conditions before beach days. Red tide and water quality change day to day. The FWC updates its red tide map daily at 5 PM, and the Florida Healthy Beaches program posts the latest water quality ratings for Pasco County. A quick check before you load the cooler is worth it.
One note on the dining strip: the waterfront bar Ollie's on the Beach on Clark Street has closed, so the dependable open-air choice with your feet near the sand remains Sam's Beach Bar at 6325 Clark Street, an easy walk from the beach and a reliable stop after a paddle. Our dining guide is kept current with the open spots and the closures.
The Bottom Line: Late October is peak season on the Hudson Beach FL coast. Stone crab season is officially open across Pasco County, Halloween week fills the calendar with concerts, block parties, and glow trails, the Tarpon Springs Seafood Festival lands November 7-8, and the Spanish mackerel and creek snook are biting in Hudson, Florida. Get out there, say hello to a neighbor, and enjoy the slow, golden fall on the Gulf coast.
See you at the pier,
Kathleen
