The summer crowds are behind us, the kids are back in school, and the Gulf coast is starting to do what it does best: settle into the calm, golden turnaround that locals look forward to all year. Good News for Anglers: Snook Season Reopens September 1

If you follow fishing on the Hudson Florida coast, you know the biggest date on the September calendar: snook harvest season reopens on September 1 across the Florida Gulf coast, including the Tampa Bay management region we fish here in Pasco County. All summer, snook have been catch-and-release only while they spawned. Starting today, you can legally keep one snook per day, 28 to 33 inches, through the fall window that runs until November 30.

This is the moment many local anglers have been waiting for. Snook have been feeding heavily all summer on the beaches and along the mangrove shorelines of Hudson Beach FL, and with the season open they are a legitimate target for the dinner table. Try live greenbacks or pinfish near the seawalls and canal overhangs of the Anclote River, or work soft plastics along the grassy shorelines. Always double-check the current Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regulations before you head out, since slots and limits can change.

The September Fishing Report

Snook is the headline, but the whole inshore bite turns on in September. Cooler water and shifting bait have fish feeding in earnest before winter, which is exactly why the locals say fall is their favorite fishing season. Here is what is happening on the Pasco County flats:

• Redfish are starting to school

  From Hudson north, redfish are beginning to bunch into schools of 20 to 30 fish, ranging from undersized to better than 30 inches. Look for them around docks, canal overhangs, and mangroves on live shrimp.

• Spotted seatrout stack up in the canals

  Trout gather in the deeper residential canals and around docks and grass flats as the water cools. Live shrimp or a soft plastic on a jig head is a reliable presentation.

• Flounder season is heating up

  Fall is a prime season for flounder along the coast. Drift the edges of channels and grass flats where they lie in wait in the sand.

Labor Day & the Last Days of the Summer Series

September kicks off with Labor Day weekend (September 5 through 7), the unofficial end of summer and the finale for SunWest Park's Summer Series. The 70-acre water park in Hudson, Florida wraps up its weekly aqua park sessions, live music, and food trucks over the holiday, so it is your last weekend for that full summer experience until next year. After the holiday, the beaches of Hudson Beach FL settle into their quietest, most peaceful stretch. The water stays in the low 80s through much of September, warm enough to swim, paddle, and wade, but the parking is easy and the sand belongs to whoever shows up.

The early September calendar is gentle, and then the harvest festivals arrive. Here is what to circle:

• 8th Annual Comedy Night

  Starting in late September in Pasco County, with pumpkin patch, corn maze, and fall activities running through early November. A favorite family outing a short drive from Hudson Beach FL.

• Friday Night Farmers Markets

  Continuing through fall in downtown Hudson and New Port Richey, with fresh produce, local artisans, food trucks, and live music.

Fall Migration: The Birds Come Home to Werner-Boyce

September is peak fall migration on the Florida Gulf coast, and Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park in Pasco County is one of the best places to watch it. Warblers and other migratory songbirds are moving through, while resident wading birds like great blue herons, egrets, white ibis, and roseate spoonbills feed along the shoreline. Keep an eye on the sky for ospreys and the resident bald eagle pair, and paddle a kayak out to spot shorebirds like American oystercatchers and terns on the offshore flats.

The park's salt marsh and mangrove trails are a birder's paradise this time of year. Bring binoculars, go early, and you will understand why the locals never tire of it. It is also one of the loveliest places on the coast for a quiet sunrise paddle before the day heats up.

While September eases us in, the festival season builds through fall.
